Tesco Home Insurance offers discounts to those who have fitted security systems to their homes. A professionally fitted alarm gives you discounts off your contents premium, which increase if it's linked to the police. Further discounts are available on approved locks on your doors and windows. (This discount is unavailable if you buy online).
Home Office Top Ten Tips
- Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat, in a flowerpot or behind a loose brick - thieves know to look there first!
- Fit a door chain or bar and door viewer (spy-hole).
- Fit sturdy deadlocks (British Standard BS3621) to all doors
- Fit strong locks to external doors and windows, and make sure they're locked at all times
- Keep your tools and ladders securely locked up – a burglar could use them to get into your house
- When you're out in the evening, leave your lights on and shut the curtains
- Remove all keys from inside locks, and keep them out of sight and in a safe place
- Mark your property so that police can verify it in the event of recovery
- Install outside security lighting; if your property is lit up a burglar may think twice
- Make sure your doors and frames are strong and in good condition - wood doors should be at least 44mm thick
