What food is bad for cats?

A cat's digestive system differs from ours and therefore they cannot and should not eat the same things that we do as some of the food we eat every day can be harmful to a cat.

Garlic and onions can be lethal to a cat if it ingests a certain amount.

Feeding leftovers with garlic and onions is not a good idea as they contain N-propyl disulphide which destroys cats' red blood cells and this could cause Heinz body anaemia.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes and green potatoes are members of the Solanaceae family of plants contain a bitter poisonous alkaloid called Glycoalkaloid Solanine which could potentially be fatal to your cat. One cherry tomato can be enough to make your cat very ill.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine which is extremely toxic to cats.

If your cat eats a piece of chocolate you should get it to a vet as soon as possible.

Milk

Contrary to common belief, your cat should not drink milk as most cats are in fact lactose intolerant.

Milk isn't toxic to cats, but it can have an adverse effect on your cat's well-being.

An adult cat doesn't need milk in it diet and it could result in your cat having symptoms that include an upset stomach, cramps and gassiness.

If your cat does beg for milk it is better to give it a small amount of cream as it contains more fat and less lactose.
