What to insure when going on holiday
This is a very common question and it can be a bit of a minefield to balance what you need to insure against the huge range of offerings from insurers.
Firstly, make sure all your personal belongings are insured. Remember to insure your watch, MP3 players, any expensive handbags, luggage, cameras or jewellery. Be careful that you only insure things you plan to take. There is no need to insure your MP3 player if you are not planning to take it with you.
Insuring against late departures, missed connections and cancelled flights is also a good idea particularly if you are flying with a budget airline. Make certain that your passport is insured and get check that your spending money and/or traveller's cheques are insured to make sure you don't get stranded if anything happens.
Finally, if you are going on an adventure holiday for example skiing or snowboarding, it's a good idea to take out a travel insurance policy that provides personal injury cover and your equipment is covered. There are many insurance packages designed for sports holidays. If you are doing any adventure travel or trekking you should check if mountain rescue is covered, and the altitude to which you are covered.
Remember to read the small print to check what you are covered for and if you have any questions ask the people you are buying the insurance from. Having the right travel insurance will save time and headaches.
